The Brand New Air Traffic Control System (BNATCS) is a comprehensive initiative led by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to modernize the National Airspace System (NAS). The program aims to replace aging infrastructure with a modern, integrated air traffic control system that enhances safety, improves efficiency, increases capacity, and prepares the nation's airspace for future aviation technologies.
BNATCS encompasses a wide range of modernization efforts, including communications, surveillance, automation, digital infrastructure, facilities, cybersecurity, and workforce development. Together, these investments will create a more resilient and connected air traffic management system capable of supporting the evolving needs of commercial aviation, general aviation, military operations, uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS), Advanced Air Mobility (AAM), and commercial space operations.

BNATCS Capabilities
Below are the capabilities identified by the FAA and are covered under that initial $12.5B funding approved by Congress as a down-payment. These capabilities mainly cover the modernization of technologies and infrastructure. However, an additional $20B is needed fully modernize AND transform the NAS.
