Daniel K. Elwell Named 2019 Glen A. Gilbert Memorial Award Winner

The Air Traffic Control Association (ATCA) is pleased to announce that Acting Administrator Daniel K. Elwell has been selected as the 2019 recipient of the Glen A. Gilbert Memorial Award, ATCA’s highest honor and one of the most prestigious awards in aviation.

An aviation leader with more than 40 years’ experience, Mr. Elwell has led modernization efforts for the US National Airspace System – the largest and most complex in the world – all while keeping it the safest. He has tirelessly promoted industry collaboration and exhibited grace under pressure in the midst of every opportunity and pitfall of aviation’s third golden age of new entrants and emerging technologies.
Elwell was appointed deputy administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) by President Trump in June 2017, and he began serving as acting administrator upon the Hon. Michael Huerta’s retirement in January 2018. Prior to serving as Acting Administrator, Elwell held senior positions with Airlines for America (A4A), Aerospace Industries Association (AIA), for US Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao, the late Senator Ted Stevens (R-AK), and for the FAA as assistant administrator for policy, planning, and environment.

While Mr. Elwell has steadfastly led all aspects of the aviation industry and its workforce, his first love is flying. After graduating from the US Air Force Academy, Lieutenant Colonel Elwell earned more than 6,000 flight hours in the US Air Force and US Air Force Reserve, including combat service during Operation Desert Storm. Following his active duty military service, Mr. Elwell was a commercial pilot with American Airlines for 16 years and managing director for the airline’s international and government affairs office.
In accepting the Glen A. Gilbert Memorial Award, Mr. Elwell joins aviation greats, including the Hon. Linda Hall Daschle, Delta’s Richard Anderson, NATCA President Paul Rinaldi, the Hon. Jane Garvey, Boeing’s Neil Planzer, and former Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta.

The Glen A. Gilbert Memorial Award Banquet will be held on Tuesday, October 22, 2019, at the Marriott Marquis as part of the ATCA Annual Conference and Exposition.

Tickets will be available soon. For more information, visit www.atca.org/glengilbert

Hon. Linda Hall Daschle Named 2018 Glen A. Gilbert Memorial Award Winner

The Air Traffic Control Association (ATCA) is pleased to announce that former FAA Acting Administrator Linda Hall Daschle has been selected as the 2018 recipient of the prestigious Glen A. Gilbert Memorial Award, one of the most prominent awards in aviation and ATCA’s highest honor.

A pioneer for women in air traffic management, Daschle was the first female to hold the post of Acting Administrator for the FAA. She began her aviation career in Kansas nearly 45 years ago as a licensed weather observer for the agency. In 1993, she was nominated by President Clinton and confirmed by the US Senate for the position of FAA Deputy Administrator. One of her first tasks involved an assessment of the agency’s key air traffic modernization program called the Advanced Automation System which was eventually overhauled, saving the agency an estimated $1.6 billion. She also oversaw the advancement of new regional airline safety regulations and conducted a review of the agency’s safety and surveillance program, which resulted in one of the single largest hires of new safety inspectors in FAA history.

Ms. Daschle has held numerous government and private-sector leadership positions, including with the American Association of Airport Executives, the Air Transport Association, the former Civil Aeronautics Board, and with the law firm of Baker Donelson. She is currently President of LHD & Associates, Inc, and serves on the board of Aireon, LLC.

In accepting the Glen A. Gilbert Memorial Award, Ms. Daschle joins aviation greats, including Delta’s Richard Anderson, NATCA President Paul Rinaldi, the Hon. Jane Garvey, Boeing’s Neil Planzer, former Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta, and pilot A. Scott Crossfield. (View press release HERE.)
